Ribe coauthors journal article on ecosystem services
University of Oregon Professor Robert Ribe recently coauthored an article in the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The article focuses on how cultural and aesthetic experiences factor in when applying ecosystem services to policy- and decision-analysis. The global Millennium Ecosystem Assessment advocated this method of decision-making, which has been adopted by the European Union, Australia, the U.S.
Concessions in Food Security - Master Project Presentation by Jim Figurski
The Department of Landscape Architecture is proud to announce the Master Project presentation by MLA candidate, Jim Figurski.
Jim's presentation, Concessions in Food Security, will be on Monday, November 26 at Noon in Room 231 of Lawrence Hall.
His topic includes building public--private partnerships in urban agriculture as a strategy to address food insecurity.
UO architecture program first in sustainable design
The University of Oregon’s architecture program was recently selected as the nation’s number one program for sustainable design education in the 2013 report of architecture schools. The top-ranked program has been recognized multiple times as leading sustainable design education.
The undergraduate architecture degree program is ranked overall at number 13 and in the top 6 of programs at public universities. There are 154 accredited architecture programs in the United States.
Hulse research helps win restoration prize
For the past 20 years, David Hulse has researched how to preserve and restore the Willamette River Basin. For Hulse – the Philip H. Knight Professor of landscape architecture at UO – no award is higher than receiving the 2012 Thiess International RiverPrize, the equivalent to the Nobel Prize for river restoration.
Community design project wins ASLA Academic Award
Landscape architect graduate student Deven Young won the sole Academic Award presented in this year’s 2012 Oregon ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) design competition. Young won for his “Community Design Project.” The awards were presented Oct. 13 at the Emerald Ballroom at the Tiffany Center in downtown Portland.
Changes underway for the Courthouse Garden
The Department of Landscape Architecture’s three-year agreement with City of Eugene comes to an end but the work inspired by the Courthouse Garden goes on. Students, faculty members, and members of the community are encouraging both the city and the university to look for a new location for the garden after the current site has been sold. The Register-Guard has posted news and editorials to encourage all the partners to come together to establish a good alternate location for this excellent project. Homeless to benefit from UO grant
A $7,000 grant awarded to a UO student design organization for 2012-13 by the Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics will create a shelter or other tools to help homeless people in the Eugene-Springfield area meet basic needs.
The student organization, designBridge, is a multidisciplinary group linking UO with the surrounding community by offering architectural and/or product design-build services to local organizations that otherwise could not afford them.

UO joins global partners to forge EU landscape policy
The University of Oregon is the only American university to consult with fourteen European partners toward the development of a methodology for the maintenance and preservation of European landscapes. UO landscape architecture Assistant Professor Deni Ruggeri will present the UO’s findings at the EUROSCAPES project final conference in Val Maubuée, France, in October.
