Art

The Department of Art at the University of Oregon has had one of the largest and most unique art departments in the Northwest for more than 80 years. We place importance on innovation, skill and critical thinking, with the intention of preparing students to contribute to and be stewards of visual culture.

With that goal in mind, all disciplines are emphasized, with courses in ceramics, fibers, metalsmithing and jewelry, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and digital arts. Interdisciplinary endeavors are nurtured by the diversity of offerings in the program. With undergraduate and graduate programs in all media areas, we are prepared to address issues of the importance and future of visual art in a rapidly shifting social environment.

Studio facilities are a vital support for a program of this quality. Studios are constantly upgraded and include black and white, color, and alternative process facilities for photography; a broadly equipped ceramics area; computer labs; comprehensive printmaking facilities, book arts and paper-making; an extensive fibers area; a full range of metalsmithing equipment; computer and sound labs for multimedia; and a bronze casting foundry in sculpture.

Faculty in the program are dedicated teachers and professional artists with national and international reputations. We believe that a high level of professional involvement by faculty provides students with the best possible example of their own future potential. The department's programs reflect our belief in the enduring value of visual art. We endeavor to provide our students with skills and knowledge that will enable them to sustain that value.
