The Department of Art History offers both graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to study the principal art and architectural traditions of Europe, the United States, and Asia. The Department has eleven faculty, two of whom hold chaired professorships, the Marion Dean Ross Distinguished Chair in Architectural History and the Maude I. Kerns Professorship in Oriental Art. The curriculum has exceptional depth in its coverage of architectural history and Asian art, as well as in the breadth of its Western art offerings. Museum training is possible through coursework and internships in the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and the Certificate of Museum Studies. The Department offers the only M.A. and Ph.D. program available in Oregon. Two lecture endowments enrich the curricular offerings: one for the history and aesthetics of sculpture, and another for the history of design and decorative arts.
