Historic Preservation
The Historic Preservation (HP) Program is a two-year course of study, with a minimum of 73 credits. The HP graduate program includes a core of HP classes, an architectural history component (offered through Art History and Historic Preservation), research and practical application, and areas of concentration. Students graduate with a Masters of Science in Historic Preservation upon completion of a thesis or terminal project. The focus of study is preservation history, theory and building technology, along with the economic, legal, and administrative processes of preservation. Additionally, there is an advanced standing masters track for University of Oregon undergraduate minors who have taken the core curriculum and architectural history component in Historic Preservation for Graduate credit, and have earned a grade of B or better. As an interdisciplinary program, the HP curriculum draws on courses from eight programs and departments within the School of Architecture and Allied Arts. Classes are augmented by fieldwork in the urban and rural areas of the region. An annual summer field school for in-coming graduate students provides hands-on experience in preservation of Pacific Northwest historic resources.οΎ In addition, the Historic Preservation Program sponsors a summer field school in Croatia, generally taken between the first and second year.
