Energy Scheming. This energy evaluation software gives the designer immediate direction on how to improve the building's energy performance. Intended to assist designers at the formative, or the "napkin stage" of design, Energy Scheming features complete graphic input and output in order to be compatible with architectural designers' method of working in graphic rather than numerical abstractions. Software is available for Mac or Windows with professional and student prices.
High Performance Classroom
ESBL designed a high performance classroom which includes a new skylight system complete with a succession of louvers that automatically adjust to the amount of sunlight outside. The device distributes light from the middle to the outer portions of the classroom so that a minimum interior light level of 20 foot candles is maintained at all timed during daylight hours. This project was developed in partnership with Mike Hatten, SOLARC, and Heinz Rudolf, BOORA, to create a classroom that uses available light and outside air so that no artificial lights, heating or air conditioning is needed during the day. A uniquely designed skylight system called "the halo" provides distribution of natural light through the room.
