The College of Design (formerly the School of Architecture and Allied Arts) is a unique academic, professional, and creative community. We are founded on the principles of interdisciplinarity and collaboration. We are driven by curiosity and experimentation. We create and share knowledge. And we are committed to furthering sustainability and social equity in a time of accelerated environmental and social change. I am honored to be joining such an innovative and rigorous academic community as your new dean.
This year, we have much to celebrate. Our students and faculty continue to win prestigious national awards and external grants in architecture, art, design, and planning fields. Top-ranked publications continue to flow from our desks. Our practitioners exhibit, curate, build, and intervene in spaces and communities throughout the world. Our labs, studios, and classrooms thrive as spaces where faculty and students collaborate to push the boundaries of what’s possible. And our presence in Portland is growing with new MA programs launching and research activities gaining momentum in the White Stag Block.
We also have work to do. Like the university as a whole, the College of Design is placing greater emphasis on pursuing academic excellence, increasing access and inclusion, and enhancing the student experience. We are doing this not only to sharpen our academic profile and deliver the highest quality education to our students. We are also doing this because innovation thrives under conditions of diversity, cooperation, and optimism.
I look forward to working with all parts of the College of Design community, including our alumni and community partners, to realize our shared ambitions for the school.
