Photographer Ron Jude has just joined a prestigious class of scholars and creatives: The Guggenheim Fellowship.

The School of Art + Design associate professor has been named a 2019 fellow, one of 168 awardees out of a pool of 3,000 applicants. Jude is one of 12 photographers selected.

“It really comes at a great time for me, not only in terms of the arc of my career, but it also gives me the support I need to complete a body of work I’m now developing,” Jude told Around the O.

That body of work is 12 Hz, a photography project that explores the idea of geological forces that are so vast—think plate tectonics and ocean tides–that they are imperceptible to the human eye. Jude uses a medium-format digital camera to make large-format prints to emphasize the scale of what he’s trying to capture. You can see the 12 Hzproject so far at Jude’s website.
