Environmental Policymakers and Planners (EPP) Meeting

November 12 guest speaker: Don Holtgrieve, on "John Steinbeck's Cannery Row and the Beginnings of Marine Conservation Biology."

John Steinbeck came to know Ed Ricketts as the operator of the Pacific Biological Laboratory on Cannery Row in Monterey, CA. He became the character Doc in Steinbeck's Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday. In 1944 Steinbeck, Ricketts and a crew aboard the 'Western Flyer' studied marine life in the Gulf of California. The published log from that trip became more than an account of scientific collecting. It became a Zen-like approach to viewing the roles of humans in the natural world. Ricketts' unpublished notes mostly consisted of volumes of observations about marine invertebrates. But their major value was that they formed the basis for the Between Pacific Tides book which was an inventory of tide-pool creatures based on environmental characteristics rather than taxonomy. The book is still the best guide to intertidal marine biology and Ricketts' most impressive legacy is the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium.
