Marion Dean Ross Lecture Series: Models and Worldbuilding - "On the Afterlife of Models"
May 8
5:30–7:00 p.m.
Lawrence Hall 115

Thanks to the generous support from the Marion Dean Ross Endowment and the Department of the History of Art and Architecture (HAA) for a new lecture series this spring.

Teresa Fankhänel is the third speaker. Before joining the MSU Broad Art Museum in 2022, she was a curator at the Architecture Museum in Munich (Germany) and an associate professor at the Department of Architectural History and Curatorial Practice at the Architecture School of the Technical University of Munich. Her exhibitions include The Architectural Model (2012), Werkzeuge des Entwerfens (2017), African Mobilities (2018), The Architecture Machine (2020–21), Built Together (2021), Shouldn’t You Be Working? (2023) and Andrea Canepa: As We Dwell in the Fold (2023). Her writing focuses on model making, computation, archival strategies, the practice and theory of exhibition making, and architectural design practices.

This spring 2024 lecture series and small online exhibition celebrates the legacy of Marion Dean Ross and his founding of HAA some 60 years ago. With an extensive collection of student models from Ross’s classes still visible around Lawrence Hall, the focus of the series is on the theme of architectural models and world-building.

Adam DeSorbo: Ablaze (With Destruction and Abundance)

March 1- May 19, 2024 CFAR billboard project at 510 Oak Street, Eugene, OR 97403

Ablaze (With Destruction and Abundance) depicts ochre-tinted maple leaves nailed to wood planks that have been strengthened through a traditional Japanese charring process known as the Yakisugi method. The burned boards and maple leaves allude to transitional states, both benign and seasonal, and the more destructive forces of increasing wildfire activity. The embedded relationship between preservation and destruction as it relates to the Anthropocene brings our paradoxical tendencies as a species into full relief. The image is activated through original text by the artist, making explicit the process of grieving a burning world. The interaction between the image and the text proposes an embrace of our ecological cracking, the necessity to witness, the urge to preserve, and the radical act of finding joy while existing in the cracks.

This CFAR billboard project is supported by the University of Oregon Department of ARt’s Center for Art Research in conjunction with the exhibition series Embrace Fearlessly the Burning World.

We are a creative partnership that has been collaborating on primarily photo- and video-based projects since 2022. This show is an exploration and interplay of our digital workspace, the creative process as play, and the dialogue of our creative processes and workspaces combined. We are heavily interested in the idea of archival and have kept up an Instagram account together archiving our creative process; this project is also an archive of some of our recent creative projects and the raw digital forms that exist within it. We love movement, visuals so rich you want a taste, chaotic desktops, and file management (or lack thereof). Projecting visuals from the digital space to the physical space has also been a common theme in our work. Ultimately, in line with our name, flower delivery showcases the visuals that exist in our digital space projected in the physical realm. Like a surprise digital flower delivered to your doorstep and emitting your eyes.

Cinema Studies invites the UO community to a “meet and mingle” with Marmoset Music’s Bob Werner.  Join us for cookies, beverages and a casual get together. Free and open to the UO community.

Marmoset is a full-service music agency for brands, filmmakers and creatives that specializes in curated music for licensing, award-winning music production, music supervision, clearances, customizations, sound design and more.

Bob Werner (he/him) is the Head of Creative Services at Marmoset, where he leads all aspects of curating and creating music for Marmoset’s vast catalog, as well as custom scoring and sound design projects for global clients in advertising, film, TV and more. Before joining Marmoset to shape one of the top performing sync catalogs in the industry, Bob studied video and sound production at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, pursuing his lifelong passion in music and cinema. Fun fact: Bob's favorite thing about living in Portland is the vibrant indie cinema scene, where he saw 50 films in theaters in 2023 and aims to see 100 this year.  Through his 10+ years working in sync licensing, he’s developed and helped launch dozens of artists into successful, full-time music careers, with licensing revenue as a cornerstone of their income, ultimately supporting lifelong pursuits in music. Bob is based in Portland, Oregon.

This event is part of the 2024 Art of Producing Visiting Filmmaker Series, featuring screenings, talks, and receptions with award-winning producers and filmmakers. All events are free and open to the UO community.

May 10
5:00 p.m.
Please join us in the Portland WSB Papé Forum, or on Zoom for the talk "The Condition of Difficulty" by Carlos Bedoya (Principal & Cofounder, PRODUCTORA).   This talk raises the possibility of searching both in difficulty and detour for a unique form of architecture; moving away from traditional methods, and seeking to establish a significant relationship within our profession, which may allow us to find a new set of architectonic axioms.   Carlos Bedoya is an architect based in Mexico City and a principal of PRODUCTORA, a firm he co-founded in 2006 with Wonne Ickx, Victor Jaime, and Abel Perles. He studied architecture at the Universidad Iberoamericana, in Mexico City, and received a Master’s degree in criticism and design from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona. Before forming PRODUCTORA, he worked at Josep Maria Botey and Flores & Prats Studio in Barcelona, and with Enrique Norten and Fernando Romero as a project director in Mexico City. Bedoya has lectured about PRODUCTORA’s work worldwide and has written about architecture in different media. He has taught at TEC de Monterrey, the Universidad Iberoamericana, Illinois Institute of Technology, and has led workshops in the United States and South America, MPAA11-Dual Workshops at ETSAM, Madrid, Spain, and professor at Bard College, Urban Creatures: Open practices workshop II. He is a founding partner of LIGA -Space for Architecture -Mexico City, an independent platform that, since 2011, has stimulated an interchange of ideas and investigation on contemporary Latin American architecture. He has also been a member of the editorial board of Domus Mexico.     Zoom https://uoregon.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUtdu-vqTotG9A1skvi-WyiLu-dNEEpZbr- Meeting ID: 910 1677 1714

Join us to celebrate the 2023-24 partnership between the University of Oregon Sustainable City Year Program (SCYP) and City of Salem!

This year-long partnership helps communities solve the problems of today and lay the groundwork for a sustainable, livable future—all while helping students prepare for the workforce through applied learning. University of Oregon students and faculty studied and made recommendations in over 20 courses directed at high priority projects for City Council and the Salem community. The partnership will end with a celebration event with leaders from Salem and the UO, faculty, students, local elected officials, and community members.

A poster session of final projects from two spring courses, Topics in Bicycle Transportation and Equitable Urban Parks, will occur for the first hour of the event for the community to interact and ask questions regarding the student’s work. Formal remarks will feature speakers from both entities, including UO faculty and students highlighting each project, proposed recommendations, and outcomes. Following formal remarks, attendees will have the opportunity to connect with UO faculty and students in an open house format to learn more about how the courses will help create long-term value for the Salem community.
